How Client-Side PDF Annotation & Editing Works

ZapPebble provides an in-browser PDF annotation studio that lets you mark up, sign, redact, and type onto PDF documents without uploading them to a third-party server. PDF pages are rendered using pdfjs-dist, and an interactive HTML5 Canvas overlay captures your edits. When you save, pdf-lib compiles your annotations into permanent PDF vector streams directly in your browser.

Important Limitations & Security Considerations

Whiteout vs. True Sanitization

The whiteout tool draws an opaque white vector rectangle over content. While visually masked, for sensitive legal evidence or government secrets where underlying text streams must be scrubbed from the file binary, use dedicated sanitization tools.

Reflowing Existing Text

PDF is a fixed-layout format. You cannot "backspace" existing baked-in text paragraphs to cause words to wrap. To rewrite full paragraphs, use PDF to Word or the in-browser Word Document Editor.
