How to use URL Encoder and Decoder

Simple steps to get your task done in seconds

01

Paste text or a URL

Type or paste into the left box.

02

Pick encode or decode

Choose Value for query values and path parts, or Whole URL to keep : / ? and &.

03

Copy the result

The result updates as you type. Copy it with one click.

How URL Encoding (Percent-Encoding) Works

URLs are restricted by the RFC 3986 standard to a subset of ASCII characters. When query parameters contain spaces, symbols (like &, =, ?), or non-Latin Unicode characters (such as accents or emojis), they must be converted into percent-encoded sequences (a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits representing the byte value in UTF-8). ZapPebble performs this transformation instantly in your browser.

Encoding ScopeJavaScript Function UsedReserved Characters Escaped
Query Parameter (Component)encodeURIComponent()Escapes ;,/?:@&=+$# in addition to spaces and non-ASCII. Use for parameter values.
Full URL (Whole URI)encodeURI()Preserves structural delimiters like http://, slashes, and query ? symbols.
Plus Sign (+ for Space)application/x-www-form-urlencodedReplaces %20 with + for legacy HTML form payloads and search queries.

Practical Example: Passing Search Terms and Redirect URLs

The Scenario

You are building an OAuth callback or tracking URL that redirects users after sign-in. You need to pass the return address https://example.com/dashboard?view=sales&tab=q3 as a query parameter value named redirect_to.

Settings: Mode = Encode · Scope = Query parameter (component).
Encoded Result
https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fdashboard%3Fview%3Dsales%26tab%3Dq3

Because & and ? are encoded as %26 and %3F, the destination server will not mistake them for parameters of the parent URL.

Common Edge Cases & Decoding Errors

Malformed Percent Sequences

A URI error occurs if a percent sign is followed by non-hex characters (e.g. %ZZ) or if a multi-byte UTF-8 sequence was truncated mid-stream. ZapPebble detects this and explains the broken byte location.

Automatic URL Inspector

When you paste a full URL, ZapPebble automatically breaks it down into a readable key-value table of its search parameters, making debugging complex query strings effortless.

Zero Transmission

API tokens, session IDs, and private user identifiers encoded in query strings are never transmitted across the network. All parsing occurs strictly in browser JavaScript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Value (encodeURIComponent) encodes every reserved character, which is right for a single query value. Whole URL (encodeURI) leaves characters such as : / ? & = alone so the address still works.
